Have you ever been thankful for….

I woke up the other morning with this crazy thought after being sick for a week – I was thankful for getting sick.

Now I know you are thinking totally crazy right? I mean who is thankful for being sick!  The thing is getting sick allowed me not just to slow down but it allowed me to STOP!  You heard that right I was almost completely off of social media, I didn’t do any work for my art business, I did very minimal work at home (just things like taking care of the dogs and such).  It gave me permission to just stop – regroup – restore.

I needed this so badly!  I realized that I had been neglecting my needs since my dad got sick and passed almost 2 years ago.  Honestly I can’t believe it took me this long to actually get sick but way back then at that time I was in extremely good health.  Feeling so awful made me realize I have been feeling not all that great for awhile but it took getting sick to force me to make the changes that I should have long ago.

It actually takes me back to the Gratitude Junk Journal Online Workshop that I taught in last November where I did a lesson in Gratitude for Loss and Sadness.  That is still available to take and you receive lifetime access if you are interested in checking it out go here.

You know they always say in an airplane put your oxygen mask on before helping someone else get theirs on – there is good reason for this.  If you are not ok, if you are not taking care of yourself you can not help others as effectively.  Or you might help others for awhile until you burn out.

Nourishing my body

Since getting sick I have gone back to my better eating habits.  Eating at home and eating clean organic homemade foods.  It’s crazy that I was eating out so much when I absolutely love to cook.  I have actually stopped drinking coffee and that’s a big one for me.  I am a total coffee nut but I have actually stopped before.  I may go back to it but for now it feels good not to have the caffeine and other things in coffee that might not be so great for me.  This in turn has also gotten me off using the Creamor which I use to use in my coffee.  I have now switched to using a little coconut milk creamer if I feel I want a cup that has a bit of cream.  Here are 3 teas with links to where you can purchase them that I have been crushing on that have become my favorite right now Turmeric GingerChocolate Cinnamonblueberry green tea .  I am fortunate that I am able to purchase these all from my local Wegmans – which is how I found them 🙂

I have been cooking delicious hardy soups with the freshest veggies I can find during the winter, using lots of greens and colorful veggies that just feel so good to work with when cooking and are so yummy to eat.  I have been going to bed earlier to get an extra hour of rest at night and I can’t tell you how amazing it feels to wake up rested the morning.  It was so silly of me to be staying up later to watch a show that I can watch the next evening on demand.

Using Essential Oils

Because of all the clean eating and drinking my mind feels so fresh and alive.  I feel like for the longest time I have been in such fog.  Like I’m going through the motions but not really feeling things and not really being aware of what is going on.  The clarity that has come is so amazing !  I have also been using my essential oils a lot.  I have gone back to wearing frankincense on my wrists, I dab some Joy over my heart and I have been doing steam inhalations with peppermint.  To boost my immune system and cut down on the acid in my system and to make my body more alkaline I have been taking a capsule of Thieves Oil blend with lemon in the morning – 3 drops of each.

Now that I’m feeling better I am back to walking Luna about 2-3 miles a day depending on what we have going on.

Nourishing my mind

I have also been nourishing my mind and soul with books such as Healing with the Angles by Doreen Virtue and Warrior Goddess Training by Heatherash Amara.

I have committed myself to learning and using my Tarot Cards and Continue working with my oracle cards – in the online class Pull Pen Paint which I have been really enjoying learning so much here.  So many people hear the word Tarot and they get freaked out and I honestly never new exactly what they were all about but since working with them and learning about them have found that they are a wonderful tool.  They can give you the guidance just like Oracle Cards in things in life that are a challenge.  They help make sense of things that just otherwise have kinda been a mystery in my life.  They can jump start your creativity and are just really eye opening!  And I have been journaling I mean hand writing journaling like a crazy person because of using these cards and I love it.  It’s so releasing and refreshing.  I used to journal a lot and add art journaling in with it but then when I started showing a lot of my stuff online I cut out the journaling part and it feels so good to get back into it!

I also came across a couple other books that I wanted to share that are interactive – I am thinking about getting both of them I really like the description and what they are used for.  You can choose either the hard copy or an instant download so they are fairly inexpensive if you go with the download.  They are both by Jeanne Oliver and one is called Listening  and the second one is called Salt and Light

First Full Moon Ritual Practice

Looking for a boost of inspiration?

Hi Creative Friends and Happy Friday!

Those who know me and have taken my class in Hacking the ColorWheel Session 1 (which is still available and you can check it out here )know that I just love MOOD BOARDS.  I have a Pinterest board dedicated to just mood boards here , I am not sure why I am so drawn to them but when I start looking at them it’s like I can’t stop.  I guess it’s because they do “create” a mood and feeling that stirs inside of me and it’s almost euphoric!  So In December I shared the first Mood Board that I actually created and you can see that in my post here– it had all the makings of feeling cozy, festive and holiday-ish with a little bit of a romantic feel.  – at least when I was putting it together those are some of the moods / feelings that came up for me.

So today for a bit of inspiration I have created another “mood board” that I want to share with all of you.  But first I would like you to just grab a piece of paper and a pen.  Now when you see the mood board don’t over think it just write down the first things that come to your mind. Itcan be anything from a feeling, to a texture, to a memory – it doesn’t matter anything and everything that you put down is RIGHT!

Okay are you ready?

you sure?

haha just teasing here it is 🙂

Once you have all those thoughts and ideas down on your paper now you can use them to jump start your creativity – to create in your art journal or a piece of art.

Using mood boards is a great way to get out of that “creative rut” – to try on new textures or “moods”, even to experiment with new color combinations.

This mood board gives me lots of ideas and I decided to create a watercolor wreath using the color palette from it.

I loved the berries in the top photo so incorporated those into my painting.  I also added a quote that I found, as the white roses with the book pages left me with bit of a romantic feel and the birds gave me a feeling of being free.

I would love to have you share anything you might create using this mood board.  If you have a blog then please link back to here.  If you are posting on IG or FB please tag me.

One of the greatest pleasures I get as an artist is when I inspire someone.  Thank you my friends for stopping by and choosing to share some of your time with me today!

Due to the ongoing construction at my house making it impossible to do a voice over for my video I will be sharing the video I have for this month’s free download tomorrow.  I thought I could get it done for today but it’s just not going to happen with all the noise that’s going on.

Here is a sneak peek at this months freebie that will go out in my newsletter, I will also be holding off and sending out my newsletter tomorrow as well.  So if you aren’t signed up for my newsletter you have one more day to do so and still receive this months free download.  You can do that here.   And a little sneak peek below…

What’s coming up on my blog in the next few weeks?…

What’s In your heart?

Hi Friends,

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about what’s in my heart.  It’s been awhile since I did a post on what’s in your heart and I think with the New Year underway it’s time.  I have been pondering how we put so much emphasis on the New Year and not only do we feel it’s a fresh start but we feel that just because we have changed the calendar that it will actually change our lives.

Well yes in fact our lives are constantly changing – as a matter of fact your life will have changed from the time you started reading this post to the end, but that is inevitable – The Change that just naturally takes place.  But what about change that takes place because we take action???  Now that’s something to ponder.

What if this year instead of just hoping that the change of the calendar will make things better or more the way that we want – what if we were do put things into action that will cause change – change that we want for your life.

That’s exactly what I have been doing.  At the end of last year I thought back about the year and all of the things that I “did”.  And I did A LOT.  But is that what life is really about?  All the doing?  Is all the doing really living?  These are questions only you can answer for yourself and what you feel in your heart.

For me, all the doing was fine, but it was more of a coping mechanism that I used to channel the energy that I had from hurt and pain into something productive.  Not because I had to but because I needed to.  It was a means to and end and for the time being it worked and it got me through.  But if I’m being honest with myself I really don’t care to live that way.  I much prefer to select projects that have heartfelt meaning to me pour more of myself into them and simply do more of less.  I know I talked about this earlier on but I have been – taking action on these things.  So the first thing I decided to do for me was take an online class called Pull Pen Paint.  I saw this class advertised last year and because I already had so much “doing” going on I couldn’t spare the time to take it.  This year I vowed to make the time for myself to take some classes that Inspire me and allow me to grow as a person and an artist.  This class is based around Oracle and Tarot cards and is very intuitive.  It’s not about learning art techniques or even how to paint, draw or do art in a specific form it’s more about growing your inner self and intuition as well as using art and journaling along the way to express yourself using the Oracle and Tarot Cards.  I already have learned so much about myself and I know I will continue to learn more – and I am proud of putting my needs out there and jumping in feet first into something I needed.

Below are a couple photos of some art journal pages that I created during my working with the tarot and oracle cards in this class.

This art journal page came about when studying my shadow card which is the Tower.  You can read the quote that I have written on this page on my instagram post here

This spread is about the Star card which is my card for the year.  You can read more on this here

I have been also working on a special project that is near and dear to my heart and hope to be able to share in the next couple of weeks.  I am hoping to have it ready for release in the next week or so – I thought I would have it sooner but I continue to add little bits and tweak it.  I want it to be just right I know that you will all love it.

So now I bring the question to all of you my friends – what’s in your heart for the New Year?  What do you feel you need more of?  What do you feel you need less of?  And what actions will take to create the change you are looking for?

Thank you my friends for sharing your time with me today!  I am a bit late in getting out January’s newsletter it will be going out later this week with your free monthly download.

Don’t forget there is still time to sign up for the BadAss Art Journal Workshop we start on February 5th so be sure to check out all the details and get signed up here .

Have an amazing evening my friends !!

A little Luna Puppy love for all of you!!! xxoo – Sherry

StencilGirl & Inspiration Deck Blog Hop

Good Morning Friends today I have a quick tutorial for you on how I used the Mixed Media Inspiration Deck created by Kiala Givehand as a prompt to get me started in my art journal.

Starting out with just shuffling my cards and then I selected one at random

I decided to start out with 2 pages in my art journal that I really didn’t like it had kinda just been for doodling and so I never did anything with the pages. And these are the paints I used for this art journal spread

love the way it looks over the text papers!!

I needed to come up with a quote for my page.  When I created my girl I was thinking of how I can empower myself this year, thinking of how I want to be emulating that in my art.  So I came up with this quote that I thought fit perfect and I typed it & printed it out then cut it out and glued it to my page.  Added some watercolor drips under it to tie it into my page.

Thank you Kiala for allowing us to have so much fun with your Empowerment Deck!!  Now on to some giveaway fun!

Out of the box holiday gift ideas

Hi Friends,

We are just a few short days away from Thanksgiving and then the mad rush of the Holiday season really starts with gift buying madness as I call it :).  With this in mind I thought that I would share some “out of the box” gift giving ideas and also some ideas of giving back.

When I was young one of my most favorite things to do at Holiday time with my mom was to select names off the “Giving Tree” either at our church or at the mall (the Salvation Army here puts names on trees in our mall of people and kids of all ages who are in need).  My mom would always let me select about 4, we would go shopping and by things like gloves, hats, scarves etc.  We would take them home, wrap them up and bring them back the next week.  I have continued that tradition and I still find so much joy in doing it, knowing I’m providing someone who otherwise might not have a gift.

But, What if you want to give back but don’t have extra money to spend?  Being a single mom for many years and working 3 jobs to stay afloat  – that was totally my situation most Christmases.  I did not always have extra money to purchase gifts.  So I had to find creative ways to give back.  For those of you who feel like they want to do something but don’t have the extra funds here are some of my….

“creative – out of the box” ideas I’ve come up with:

  1.  Volunteer some time at a soup kitchen – there are so many places that would love to have someone stop in and help cook a meal or bake some cookies – don’t just think of Rescue Missions or Salvation Army – There is the Ronald McDonald house, we have one of those that is for adults called the Sarah House, there are hospice homes, disabled veteran homes – elderly shut-ins – do a search you will be surprised at what you will find locally in your area
  2. Volunteer some time at an animal rescue or humane association
  3. Have old towels and washcloths?  Animal rescues are always looking for these things.
  4. Have used but still good coats – boots and outerwear? – Donate them to a church or school – there are so many out there that would love something that you or your kids don’t fit anymore
  5. Volunteer some time at your church… if they have a day care during service or youth group or after school group that might need some extra help
  6. Love to bake cookies or breads ?  How about dropping some off at a Hospital or hospice home especially for the over night shifts – even nursing homes.
  7. Knit or crochet?  How about a blanket or 2 for a nursing home resident
  8. Have holiday music on a CD or MP3 player?  Copy some on to some CDs (they are so cheap now a days) and drop off at nursing homes – respite houses – disabled homes VA hospitals etc
  9. How about a box of instant hot cocoa and a bag of marshmallows to a low income after school program or day care

For out of the box – low cost ideas for loved ones and friends:

  1.  Offer a friend with kids a free night of kid sitting so they can have the night off
  2. Offer to walk or sit a friends pet – especially during holiday time it’s hard sometimes to get things done like shopping if you have to keep stopping home to let a pet out
  3. Help a loved one who doesn’t write well do the addresses on their holiday cards – I used to print up for my mom – mailing addresses of our family so that when she would send cards for any occasion she wouldn’t have to write these out as she has bad arthritis in her hands.
  4. Offer to help a friend or loved one wrap their holiday gifts
  5. If you can foods and have extra – put together a little “gift box” of some of your delicious canned goods – I know for myself I love things made by hand and with love!
  6. Again if you knit or crochet – think about scarves, coffee cozies, gloves, hats, socks or a lap blanket for a loved one or friend.
  7. Have a friend or loved one who reads?  How about hitting a used book store or thrift store and picking up a few new reads – wrap them with a few new tea bags for a special night of reading and tea
  8. Have a friend who loves coffee?  Look for a pretty mug (places like Marshalls or TJ Maxx, even the thrift store sell some beautiful inexpensive mugs) – grab a couple sample bags of some flavored coffees and wrap them all up with a couple candy canes for stir sticks.
  9. How about a little handmade journal this could even be for a young girl.
  10. Put together a little art set – put together according to age but you can find fairly inexpensive mini paint sets or small watercolor paint sets at Michaels – even check out your local dollar store you’d be surprised what you can find in there.  Pick up a pretty journal – or make one add to it a couple pretty pens again you can find gel pens for fairly inexpensive – you don’t have to buy a huge set just a couple.  Wrap it up with a few pieces of pretty ribbon you have in your stash kids & adults love little kits of pretty creative things!

I hope that this helps some of you out there looking for some unique ideas for giving or giving back.  There are really so many creative ideas and you may have some of your own that would be unique to your loved one, these are more of a “General one size fits all ideas” just to help you get those creative juices flowing with ideas!!

I hope to have time to share a few gift giving ideas that are handmade with all of you in the next few weeks for those of you who would like to give something handmade.

If you missed my video posted on Saturday you can watch it by clicking here I show you how to create your own tag kit for holiday time – this could also be made and given to a friend or loved one or change the colors – paper etc to something neutral and not holiday and give as a gift to be used for any occasion throughout the year.

This year for the Holidays I am committing to not buying more crafty stuff but I am going to use what I have and make some pretty handmade gifts and kits (because lets face it most of us have a lot of “stuff” we can use).  It feels so good to use things I bought and loved but have been holding on to for the “right time to use it”. Well NOW is the right time.

Who else is in?  All you have to do is use something you already have in your stash instead of buying something new.  Share that you are using your holiday stash and tag me on social media – if you share on your blog please link back here so I can see what you are making and creating!  Get creative and use up some of the delicious holiday stash you have collected!

I will have a new Holiday tutorial on Friday, 11/24 on my Youtube channel.  Many times my tutorials get posted there before I can share them on my blog so be sure to subscribe to my channel so you don’t miss any of my free tutorials.  You can do that here .

I leave you all with a little pug and frenchie love on this chilly day here 🙂

Have an amazing Monday my friends!!

Art Journaling Video & Meet Luna

Hi Friends,

I know as the holidays get closer and there are more things that need to be done it becomes more difficult to find time to be creative.

I for one am the first to forget to take pics at an event or outing because I am just enjoying myself and living in the moment.  I also think that it’s important sometimes to do just that – enjoy the moment and not worry about documenting it.  But if you are feeling that you want take a few minutes to document your gratitude or write down a memory then the video I have created below will give you inspiration to do just that.  It didn’t take me hours to create these pages, I added a lot of writing as I have been finding that writing things I’m grateful for is so much more powerful than just thinking them.  For a little color and pizazz I have thrown in a little watercolor and of course some glitter.

In keeping with the theme for this month which is Gratitude –

In this video I share with you my process of documenting everyday things in which I am thankful.  I also include some of the bigger things in my life which I am grateful for – such as my husband and son.  I am using some of the tags from the free monthly download that went out in my November newsletter.  (This month’s download was all about tags) If you missed out on this month’s download you can purchase it here .  I will have a link at the bottom to sign up for my newsletter or go to the section on my website called Artsy News.  I also used a quote on my page from the free download you can get on my blog post here .

Now for some really big news that was quite unexpected to us.

Since losing my Pebbles Labor Day weekend I have been telling my husband I’m not getting any more dogs.  But all the while missing my Pebbles my world has had a hole in it.    A few days ago a friend contacted me said that they had a friend who just got a puppy and they were being evicted and they needed to find it a home.  I was like NO WAY!  Of course that was not the end of the conversation it went on and I got off the phone saying I’ll think about it but probably not.  So after Dan and I talked about it we agreed to meet the puppy and see what she was like.  The story seemed all too familiar to Budha’s who we rescued when she was 6 (she passed last December at the age of 17) and I was thinking maybe this puppy needs me as much as I need her.  Dan of course was like “look if you want to get her then we will”.

So of course it was love at first site and I knew that I just couldn’t leave her to end up in whatever home they could find because they didn’t have time to properly find a home.  So Sunday afternoon we had a new family member.  Meet Little Luna.  She is a French Bulldog (not a pug I know).  But just look at that face and those ears lol

She’s just a wee 6lbs and only 12 weeks old. And we are so blessed to have her now a part of our family.

So creating has been taking a bit of a back burner as puppy training is not all that easy lol.  But I managed to get in a little bit here and there when she sleeps lol.

I have started some holiday creating already – here I created this watercolor wreath.

I will have a fun holiday tutorial for you on my Youtube Channel this Friday 11/17.  Be sure to subscribe to my channel here so you don’t miss any of my new tutorials.  Also for all of you who have subscribed thank you so much I just hit 1000 subscribers and I can’t believe it.  To many it probably seems like – well that’s not many – but it’s huge to me and means so very much!  All of your support and comments means the world to me!!

I mentioned above that I would have a link to sign up for my monthly newsletter you can do that here .

Thank you so much friends for sharing your time with me today.  Sending lots of love, peace and happiness your way!!

An Artist I admire

Friends I’m excited to share with you all that I am a guest Artist in an online class with one of my most admired Artists – Traci Bautista.

We are both Guest Artists – along with several other amazing artists – teaching in Hacking the color wheel session 2

I had the great fortune to meet Traci at the September Retreat that I went to in Kentucky – photo below.

So it seems pretty surreal now teaching in the same online workshop with her.

Hacking the Color Wheel Session 2

I urge you to check out the link here for all the details.   I am most excited about is the fact that Traci is Teaching a live session.  Since I taught in session 1 and have been to the live sessions I can tell you that it’s the next best thing to being right there in person.  You get to interact with the teacher and the other students and other teachers that attend,  and you can bet that I will certainly be there!

In my class we will be learning how to layer watercolors to create depth, below is a little sneak peek of my class

You will walk away with a set of cards that will provide you will new color palettes to use, as well as a better understanding on how to layer, what colors give you the best depths and the difference between layering and mixing.

Here is a look at the other amazing artists and you can still sign up for Session 1 here  so you can see what we did in the first round of classes.

Wishing you all a beautiful weekend my friends !!
