Good Morning Friends today I have a quick tutorial for you on how I used the Mixed Media Inspiration Deck created by Kiala Givehand as a prompt to get me started in my art journal.
Starting out with just shuffling my cards and then I selected one at random
I decided to start out with 2 pages in my art journal that I really didn’t like it had kinda just been for doodling and so I never did anything with the pages. And these are the paints I used for this art journal spread
love the way it looks over the text papers!!
I needed to come up with a quote for my page. When I created my girl I was thinking of how I can empower myself this year, thinking of how I want to be emulating that in my art. So I came up with this quote that I thought fit perfect and I typed it & printed it out then cut it out and glued it to my page. Added some watercolor drips under it to tie it into my page.
Thank you Kiala for allowing us to have so much fun with your Empowerment Deck!! Now on to some giveaway fun!

Good Morning my dear friends, how is everyone? I’m hoping you are all doing amazing. As you all know I was away last Thursday through Monday for the StencilGirl and Friends Art Retreat an Art Journal Affair. It’s been a busy week since I’ve returned but I wanted to take the time to share with all of you some special moments from this retreat.
When I signed up for this retreat I think it was at the end of 2016 or the beginning of 2017 (it was so long ago that I honestly can’t even remember when it was, but I know it was long ago enough to think that by the time it came around that my life would have calmed down and I’d be more than ready to go)
Most of you know that Labor Day weekend I lost my dear pug Pebbles which has really knocked me off my feet and as if that wasn’t enough less than a week before I was to leave for the retreat I received some upsetting news about my mom that hit me once again to the point where I almost didn’t go. I said several times to my husband that I just can’t go and put on a happy face for 5 days, I can’t my heart is not in it. I have spent most of my life just hiding my true feelings and being the strong one for everyone around me appearing to be this pillar of strength, but the events that have seemed to continually occur for the past year and half have left me tired and weary. My husband kept saying it would be good for me to get away and so I heeded his advice and last Thursday morning I took off on a plane by myself with a pain in my heart and a lump in my throat headed for Paducah, Kentucky.
I arrived at the Chicago airport with 3 hours layover and a text from my hubby saying how much he already missed me…. the feeling was mutual and I was close to tears just feeling alone. I texted Lisa Dobry who I knew was going to be on the same flight, we had been friends online for quite sometime but never met in person. When she arrived we hugged and the loneliness melted away.
We met Elaine Huffman as well as Seth Apter at the gate. I asked the lady sitting next to me if she would mind switching seats with Lisa so we could sit together and she was happy to do so.
Lisa and I sat and chatted the whole way as if we had been friends in person forever. We never missed a beat, we laughed, we cried, we hugged, we shared, we were together after so long of the online friendship we were together and the question of whether I should have come or not slipped away as I felt loved among friends.
The first morning was Nancy Curry’s class called Transformation (and well who knew that meal service was not like that in NY and much slower lol) – so we were a few min late for class – sorry Nancy!! Here is the link to her website so you can check her out.
Well this really started the artfully fun weekend for me – we learned a lot and Nancy was fabulous, fun and an absolute joy to be around. We ended up sitting next to each other in classes the rest of the weekend and I so enjoyed getting to know her!! What an amazing lady!!
The next few days was a flurry of conversation, making art and sharing our hearts with like minded friends. To say it was amazing is really not even close to expressing how special this weekend was to me.
Day 1 was Pam Carriker and MaryBeth Shaw and all I can say is that these amazing ladies touched my heart with their classes and teaching. It was a bit overwhelming to have so much greatness and talent in one room.
Pam Carriker’s Class:
MaryBeth Shaw’s Class:
My fav technique from MaryBeth’s Class was this thing with whiteout, the technique was so simple but yet added so much – if you ever have the opportunity to take a class with anyone in my blog post all I can say is go for it. You won’t regret it as everyone of them was soooo amazing!!
In person with the Stencil Queen herself what an amazing experience !!!❤️
Traci Bautist’s class:
Seth Apter’s Class:
I didn’t quite finish any of my projects from the day but it’s ok because I enjoyed the techniques and now I can work on them at my leisure.
I was asked by MaryBeth Shaw to teach a mini demo on Saturday night which was a lot of fun. Thank you to Lisa and Trena for getting me everything I forgot to bring to the demo table you ladies are the best!! ❤️
This was the tag that we made using beautiful StencilGirl Stencils of course
I have a bunch of photos of friends that I would also like to share with all of you it was hard to get a photo with everyone.
This is Mary Nasser and I she is even cuter in person and what a total sweetheart!!❤️❤️
Sherry and Mary Nasser
The welcome reception was just amazing and it was so much fun to stencil our own aprons.
Thank you to StencilGirl and all the artists who were beyond generous with all of the artsy gifts that they gave us.
Here is Carol Baxter and I. I love this lady she was so much fun!! Yup I’m a kisser just deal with it lol ❤️ She works with the StencilGirl team for those who might not know so her and I have talked many times on the phone but this was our first in person visit. Hopefully first of many. Again it was like old friends it usually happens that I call for a quick question and 45 min later we are like well we better get back to work haha.
Saturday night by the fire with friends what a fabulous evening we had with stories and sharing and just beautiful friendships. Thank you ladies!! all of you.
Pictured here is Patty, Lisa and Myself and the top left is Dee, Patty, Lisa and myself.
From top left we have Debi Adams (stencil girl teammate), Patty (we met through Lisa Dobry – StencilClub) Kiala Givehand (stencil girl teammate), Dee we met through stencilclub and have been friends online for quite sometime and of Course You all know the amazing Carolyn Dube (and yes she is super amazing in person and a total BLAST to be around – she will make you laugh so hard your stomach will hurt!! ❤️)
It was so much fun to meet some of my other teammates and to meet friends that I have known online in person!!
My Roommate, Elaine and I went into town on Friday for awhile and we found Curls and Cream and some amazing views / scenery
The videos aren’t the greatest lol, but I wanted to share a little bit of what we saw there with all of you. They also had an awesome handmade soap shop in there little town which I bought some yummy soaps there to bring home. They smell amazing !
Thank you to my wonderful roommate for taking care of so many things so that I didn’t have to, it means more to me than you will ever know!!
Thank you to all of you who made amazing goodie bags and to those who made me special goodie bags I can’t express how this event has filled my heart and made me feel so special. To those who I didn’t get a photo with I’m sorry but you are still in my heart and my thoughts. This event was such a blessing and it was all the people who were there that made it what it was, it will forever be etched in my heart.
The moral of this story is that I didn’t have to put on a “happy’ face because these were my people and they loved and embraced me for who I am, and they didn’t need to be someone I’m not. They love me for who I am and I had a real happy face because of this. When people talk about finding your tribe I know that I am blessed to have found mine but even more than that I found my “family”.
I am headed into this weekend with a full heart and special memories with good friends on my mind.
Wishing you all a relaxing and heartfelt weekend !!
Hi Friends and thanks for joining me for another Stencil Crush Tuesday. Hope that everyone had a beautiful holiday this past week or weekend if you celebrate. I certainly enjoyed the lovely weather we had for the most part and YEAH my Autumn Cherry Trees and Weeping Cherry have started to blossom so excited. Especially because the crazy weather we had last year where it warmed way up way too early and then we had several frosts and snow my trees last year didn’t get any blooms :(. So I was thrilled to see the blossoming this weekend for sure!!
So to catch you all up on a few happenings in my life, March and the beginning of April have been very hard for me it is this time last year that my dad fell terminally ill (which we found out in March and lost him just 5 weeks later) that in turn spiraled things for me with my mom having dementia and having to find her a home. So for the past few weeks I have honestly been in a funk. I know….. you wouldn’t know it from my social media feeds as I don’t typically talk about things that are bothering me as I tend to really keep to myself and withdraw when times like this happen for me and I just need my quite space I guess with my family. So if I have not been commenting or chatting etc lately as much on FB and IG well now you know where I’ve been.
So on with some happier news ….. well I have several creative things in the works that I have also have had my head buried in and will for a few more weeks that I am just bursting at the seams to share with you but can’t quite yet! But soon I promise!!
So on to today’s video and giveaway ……what giveaway ???? yup you read that right all the details will be in the video details so be sure to check it out on my Youtube Channel and below is a photo of the prize!!

Hi Friends and welcome to this weeks Stencil Crush Tuesday. This week its all about the Stars. I have been wanting to create a page using Mary C. Nasser’s Star Map stencil because I love it so much. So my art journal page this week is centered around that stencil. I really enjoyed creating this page and I love the quote on it which says: “Be Glad of Life because it gives you the chance to love, and to play and to look at the stars”
So grab your coffee and lets see what stencils I’m crushing on this week 🙂
Stencils used in this weeks video can be found here:
Hi creative friends, I’m excited to share with you this weeks Stencil Crush Tuesday video. A couple things I wanted to share with all of you first thank you so very much for all the kind comments on my videos and on my blog, it has truly meant a lot to me because when I create these videos I may have an idea in mind but not always. Many times it’s just me loving certain stencils and playing to see what they can do, so you will see things like me deciding or changing my mind during the video – I try to edit out some of the decision making and such to keep it to a nice length to watch where you don’t have to commit to tons of time but some of it gets left because it’s me sharing not just these gorgeous stencils with you but my process of creating (which yeah can be a bit odd at times lol)
The stencil I’m crushing on this week just kinda “Popped” out at me the other day. I was actually picking up my art table and putting away some stencils I had out and I hadn’t a clue what stencil or stencils were going to be featured this week when one fell out of the bag I was holding. When I saw it I was like OMG I love this stencil – yes I hate to say that I have so many that some have not been used yet, some I forget about and so on. So here was this beauty laying on my table begging to be used. (back tracking a bit) my Hubby went in for surgery to repair a hernia Thursday very early morning so I knew that I would probably be stressed trying to get this video done when I hadn’t even thought about it when Sunday rolled around. Having a few hours to myself while he took a nap I pulled out a sheet of water color paper got my camera out and started taping. When I went to edit the video I was like what the heck is the name of this stencil – I knew it was one by MaryBeth Shaw but when I went to look for it on the StencilGirlProducts.com site I couldn’t find it. I went to look at the numbers on it that code it for easy look up and WAAAAA it’s a StencilGirl Club Stencil. Yup that’s right this baby is an exclusive – so you can get this stencil still but you have to join the club to do so – honestly it’s so worth it (an no one is paying me or telling me to say this it’s strictly my opinion) I love StencilGirl Club. You get exclusive videos by the artists each month as well as the 3 monthly stencils and access to the private FB group and now the opportunity to be a part of their Pintrest Board where you can pin your StencilGirl Club art. So here is the link if you want to check it out and this weeks STENCIL CRUSH is Stencil: SC 04-2016 (from April of 2016).
So I have been long winded here on this post so lets get to the video 🙂
here is the completed art journal page
and a few detailed shots:
Thanks so much for joining me today and for taking time out of your busy schedule to stop by my blog and share some creative time with me. I will be back next Tuesday for another fabulous Stencil Crush. Have an amazing day !!! xo – Sherry
Hello Hello Hello friends, it’s such an honor this month to be a part of StencilGirl Club Voices. This month’s stencils are designed by Artist, Gwen Lafleur and are just simply amazing. Here is what this month’s club stencils look like.
If you haven’t heard of Stencil Club before you totally need to check out all the details here. Here are a few of the fun details about the club: Each month you get 3 exclusive stencils, yup that’s right exclusive stencils that can not be purchased anywhere else. Always created by one of the StencilGirl Artists and always amazing! I have been a part of the club for over a year now (yeah I know only a year – that’s only because I hadn’t heard of it before!). You also get a wonderful video tutorial showing you how they used their stencils and that again is exclusive to club members and …….you get access to a private Facebook group that yup you got it is exclusive to club members. Now I know you are thinking there are tons of FB groups for art and yup there are, but this one is sooo different, it’s super interactive with lots of the StencilGirl artists also being present and commenting / posting etc in the group and on your artwork. Even the StencilGirl herself Marybeth is in the group all the time. I honestly could go on and on but I think you get that it’s the most amazing Club out there and something you must check out for yourself.
Okay on to some art. So what did I create with this month’s club stencils…… Well when I heard that the Artist was Gwen Lafleur I just knew that I wanted to do something regal with these and something that had some bling. If you have ever seen Gwen’s art it is always filled with gold and gems and glitz (truly amazing!)
So I started out with a sketch of a girl, anyone who has been following me knows that I have been working on my “whimsical girls”
To draw the bottom of her dress I used this part of the stencil, when I saw it, it totally reminded me of a ball gown.
I first painted her face, this has several layers of both watercolor and acrylic paints.
I am working on a watercolor pad, so I took out some of my inktense pencils and a watercolor crayon and lightly scribbled some background color and used a wet brush to blend it out. I wanted to keep the background more simple so not to take away from my “girl” as the focal point.
I painted her dress in a magenta, actually mixing in some of the left over face color.
I wanted her ball gown to have one of these gorgeous stenciled flowers and chose the larger of the two in the set and stenciled that in white and added some yellow in the center. Later on I change my mind about the yellow and go back over it in a deep violet color.
These adorable motifs on the large stencil were perfect for adding some additional accents to the dress and I stenciled those using a white acrylic paint as well.
Now it’s time to give her a crown. Using Cobalt Violet hue for the outline I stencil that first, then filled it in with the gold using a small paint brush. Once dry I went back over it with the cobalt violet again and then use a small round paint brush to close up the stenciled lines so it no longer looks like a stencil but solid lines.
Now I do like the crown as it is but she’s royalty right?! So I decided to add some glitter and gems
I used my stickles and put some on my palette and applied it with a small paintbrush to the crown, the 3 bottom diamond shapes on the crown I did not have a gem small enough to fit in them so I used the stickles from the bottle to fill them in creating what looked like a gem.
I ended up giving her a gem necklace and added some glitter to her dress as well on the flower and those little motifs I stenciled around the bottom.
Tying it all together I added 3 of the same motifs that I added to her dress to the top of the page and drew hearts hanging from them. I used a purple identi-pen (marker) to draw the lines and hearts then added glitter to the motifs at the top as well. Painted the hearts in with a turquoise blue and then she was done.
Thanks so very much for stopping by my blog, all your comments are cherished so if you have time to leave a comment it would mean so much to me. If you want to get in on the action and get this month’s amazing club stencils here is the link once again. Wishing everyone one a day filled with Royalty. xo
