My Journey Continues + New Video

Hi Friends,

So I had a really deep / strong awakening the other day.  It was so enlightening and so beautiful that I really wanted to share it here with all of you.

If you are not interested in reading about my journey you can scroll to the bottom where I have a fun creative video tutorial for all of you. 🙂

I am currently taking a class that helps you find and connect with your Animal Spirit Guides, in addition to working with my Spiritual mentor I have come to know that Swan, as I mentioned before is one of my Power Animals as well as Bunny.

Up until a couple days ago when I was working with my oracle cards I still didn’t know why either of my Spirit Animals were with me, what messages they might have for me or guidance they might give.

So when I was using my oracle cards and had a realization that the Swan was here to help me mourn my loss of innocence as a child and my loss of my childhood.  Growing up how I did, created a situation where I really lost my innocence very young. Below is the deck and the Swan Card from the Deck that I was using.  Until this moment I had not really a great connection with this deck, I loved the imagery but never really connected to the meaning written on the cards.

After my latest class in my Spirit Animal Journey I realized that Swan is here to protect me.   I went into to the meditation and actually was asking Bunny what message he had for me. It started out with visions of sitting on the grass when I was a child, it was sunny and the grass was soft and warm.  There were daisies all around and I worn a crown of daisies (not sure where that came from as I never have worn any flower crown), but I did used to pick daisies in the field by our house, they grew wild there and there are lots of them.

Swan came up behind me and wrapped her wings around me as if in a hug from behind.  It was then with my eyes closed in meditation that the tears started to flow.  As I laid down on the grass Swan sat beside me and spoke to me. She said “I’ve always been here you just didn’t know it. I have been here protecting you since you were young. You have a special journey in this life to help others and I am here to be with you to protect you and so you are never alone”.  At this point tears were just pouring down my face. – now at this point even though all this is happening I’m still thinking “Bunny what is the message you have for me”

Swan continued to comfort me and even though I didn’t want to leave that spot we got up and went into the woods I sat on a log of a tree. Bunny showed up, he let me pet him.  I continued to ask the bunny what his message was for me. I did not get an answer, he just sat there looking at me.

The swan gave me a hug and then offered me a small branch,  she said you are someone who needs something physical to remind you I’m here when you need me. Take this, put it in your medicine pouch so you remember to call on me when you are in need. She hugged me good by and I begged her not to go.

I allowed myself to cry healing tears when the journey was finished.  As I went about my day I hadn’t really thought much more about my experience as it’s been a hectic day.  As I was outside taking Luna to the bathroom I looked down and, right in my front yard was the branch that the Swan had given to me.  It doesn’t look like much but in my vision it was just like this with that little knot and most of the bark taken off it.

I never got the message I was looking for from Bunny but I suspect that Swan believed I’d had enough for one journey.

I know to some this story may seem a bit far fetched but I kid you not this is just how it happened.  I took a few minutes to write it down after it happened so that I would remember the details.  I truly believe that if you open yourself up to the healing your heart and soul needs that it will come to you, even if it’s not exactly how you expect it.  I feel strongly on documenting my journey here and I cherish each and everyone of you who has decided to come along for the ride.  Having so many of you in my corner really feels amazing and I appreciate each and everyone of you!!!

Now for some creative fun

This video comes from a place in my heart that I feel strongly about.  So very many people do not want to write or draw in their art journals – lest they “ruin” them.  I’m here to tell you that you most certainly should be writing and drawing in your art journals.  Art journals are personal they are a piece of our own journey sometimes the journey is just in art and that’s ok but you should put your signature on it.  Write a quote, add some marks, create some doodles, you get the idea.  I am here to share with you a couple very simple line drawings that you can add to your art journals to give them that personal touch.

I hope you enjoy todays tutorial and if you did be sure to leave me a comment, subscribe to my channel and if you give this a try tag me on social media so I can see your beautiful artwork. 🙂

Look for another fun video next week on how to enhance your art journals.

Thanks for sharing your time with me today my friends!  Have an amazing evening!

It’s Time for another Artist Feature

Hi Friends today I would like to Introduce you all to a wonderful Artist I admire Meg Smiley.  I met Meg Smiley on Instagram when I saw her beautiful and adorable animal paintings and was drawn in by her infectious positive attitude and smiling personality.

Please share little about yourself:

Hello! My name is Meg Smiley yes, “Smiley” is my real name, courtesy of my husband!  I lived in southern California until I was 18 ,but have since lived in three different states: Iowa, Pennsylvania, currently New York). I got started in art at a very young age– I honestly can’t remember when because I haven’t stopped drawing since I could hold a pencil. I never really considered that art could lead to a job growing up, so my first actual “art class” was a beginner’s course in high school. Thanks to my teacher’s encouragement, I decided to major in Graphic Design in college. I worked as a full-time Graphic Designer up until a year ago, when I had to quit my job due to an increasingly painful chronic health condition (called Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome or EDS). A few months after that is when I finally self-published my first children’s book. It’s been a wild ride but a very rewarding one as well.

What got you started in children’s books

About three years ago now, while I was still working full-time, I decided to participate in a side project to take my mind off work. This project was an Instagram challenge called the “The 100 Days Project,” and is still hosted yearly (I believe) by “The Great Discontent.” It encourages creatives of all kinds to make something (anything) for 100 days, and post their daily progress using #The100DaysProject. I wanted to teach myself how to use acrylic paint, so I decided to go for it, and almost immediately fell in love with the medium. My favorite subjects to paint, I discovered, were whimsical, colorful animals! I painted a peacock first, then a friendly but magnificent lion with a fiery, curly mane, and I just didn’t want to stop. I didn’t have an “art” or “business” account in Instagram, but I gained followers who were also participating in the project, and they started cheering me on every day!

After I had painted 10 animals, I knew I wanted to make a book. I had dreamt of writing and illustrating my own children’s book since I was a child because I love to write silly stories as well! A couple of years passed before I could finish the book because of stressful life circumstances. My husband and I moved to New York for his doctorate program, and I was just trying to keep up with work while my EDS symptoms grew worse. After I quit my job a year ago, however, I finally finished and self-published “Animals Under the Bed!” It has easily been the most rewarding personal project I’ve ever done and inspired me to start a business as well called:  Phigment Design Studio.

Please share 2 of your favorite pieces of art and tell us a little about them:

This is the mom and baby elephant painting from my children’s book, “Animals Under the Bed!” This is one of my favorite paintings, partially because it took me the longest to paint! However, I also love the sentiment behind this piece. Growing up, I was blessed with parents who encouraged my love for art and my free-spirited nature. They celebrated the fact that I colored my trees purple, drew my flowers taller than my people, and gave my people heart-shaped heads! The elephants spread in “Animals Under the Bed!” is all about the joy, silliness, and fun that parents share with their kids, which is something from my childhood that I will always be thankful for.

This painting also from my book, was originally painted for my husband in 2017 as a Valentine’s Day gift. This piece is significant to me for a few reasons. Only a few months after we got married, my husband was in a job interview and they asked him what animal he would be and why. He thought it was a strange question, but he immediately said: “Definitely a penguin. -Because i just got married and they mate for life.” I thought it was so funny that he came up with that on the fly! And then I thought it was adorable, of course, so we’ve been “penguins” ever since.  This might sound silly, but I also love this painting because penguins endure a lot of hardship to take care of their mates. Since my husband and I have been married, almost 6 years, we have moved across the country twice and been through some hugely stressful circumstances including grad school programs, chronic illness, job loss, and more). However, we have still managed to take care of each other through it all and I have never been more thankful.

I would love for you to share your website with all of us:

At my website, www.animalsunderthebed.com, you can learn more about the making of my children’s book, “Animals Under the Bed!” and purchase signed copies of the book, painting prints, mugs, and greeting cards. I also JUST started a blog all about my self-publishing process there! Several of my followers have asked me for self-publishing tips, so I am gladly sharing what I have learned.

Where can we find and connect with you on social media:

I’d love to connect with you on Instagram (www.instagram.com/phigment_design_studio/) and Facebook (www.facebook.com/PhigmentDesignStudio/)! Here’s what you can expect from my posts:

Honest, heartfelt sharing: there is too much “fake” on social media, so one of my goals is to be real, vulnerable, and “human” so that I can genuinely connect with and encourage others. – Art inspiration and new paintings: Most of my inspiration comes from my faith, my marriage, or my honest life struggles!

Share something that many may not know about you:

I live in a 250 sq. ft. apartment with my husband and dog, which is certainly an adventure lol!

Any last words or advice for my readers:

Here is my “in-a-nutshell” advice to you, inspired by my life experience so far:

Never underestimate what you can learn, accomplish, and get through in life with God’s help, motivation, and willingness to learn! You are never “stuck” where you are in life. There are always new opportunities for change around the corner, even when you can’t see them yet. – Meg Smiley

Thank you so very much Meg for sharing your art and your heart with myself and my readers today!

Thank you friends for joining me for another Artist Who Inspires me feature!

What’s In your heart?

Hi Friends,

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about what’s in my heart.  It’s been awhile since I did a post on what’s in your heart and I think with the New Year underway it’s time.  I have been pondering how we put so much emphasis on the New Year and not only do we feel it’s a fresh start but we feel that just because we have changed the calendar that it will actually change our lives.

Well yes in fact our lives are constantly changing – as a matter of fact your life will have changed from the time you started reading this post to the end, but that is inevitable – The Change that just naturally takes place.  But what about change that takes place because we take action???  Now that’s something to ponder.

What if this year instead of just hoping that the change of the calendar will make things better or more the way that we want – what if we were do put things into action that will cause change – change that we want for your life.

That’s exactly what I have been doing.  At the end of last year I thought back about the year and all of the things that I “did”.  And I did A LOT.  But is that what life is really about?  All the doing?  Is all the doing really living?  These are questions only you can answer for yourself and what you feel in your heart.

For me, all the doing was fine, but it was more of a coping mechanism that I used to channel the energy that I had from hurt and pain into something productive.  Not because I had to but because I needed to.  It was a means to and end and for the time being it worked and it got me through.  But if I’m being honest with myself I really don’t care to live that way.  I much prefer to select projects that have heartfelt meaning to me pour more of myself into them and simply do more of less.  I know I talked about this earlier on but I have been – taking action on these things.  So the first thing I decided to do for me was take an online class called Pull Pen Paint.  I saw this class advertised last year and because I already had so much “doing” going on I couldn’t spare the time to take it.  This year I vowed to make the time for myself to take some classes that Inspire me and allow me to grow as a person and an artist.  This class is based around Oracle and Tarot cards and is very intuitive.  It’s not about learning art techniques or even how to paint, draw or do art in a specific form it’s more about growing your inner self and intuition as well as using art and journaling along the way to express yourself using the Oracle and Tarot Cards.  I already have learned so much about myself and I know I will continue to learn more – and I am proud of putting my needs out there and jumping in feet first into something I needed.

Below are a couple photos of some art journal pages that I created during my working with the tarot and oracle cards in this class.

This art journal page came about when studying my shadow card which is the Tower.  You can read the quote that I have written on this page on my instagram post here

This spread is about the Star card which is my card for the year.  You can read more on this here

I have been also working on a special project that is near and dear to my heart and hope to be able to share in the next couple of weeks.  I am hoping to have it ready for release in the next week or so – I thought I would have it sooner but I continue to add little bits and tweak it.  I want it to be just right I know that you will all love it.

So now I bring the question to all of you my friends – what’s in your heart for the New Year?  What do you feel you need more of?  What do you feel you need less of?  And what actions will take to create the change you are looking for?

Thank you my friends for sharing your time with me today!  I am a bit late in getting out January’s newsletter it will be going out later this week with your free monthly download.

Don’t forget there is still time to sign up for the BadAss Art Journal Workshop we start on February 5th so be sure to check out all the details and get signed up here .

Have an amazing evening my friends !!

StencilGirl & Inspiration Deck Blog Hop

Good Morning Friends today I have a quick tutorial for you on how I used the Mixed Media Inspiration Deck created by Kiala Givehand as a prompt to get me started in my art journal.

Starting out with just shuffling my cards and then I selected one at random

I decided to start out with 2 pages in my art journal that I really didn’t like it had kinda just been for doodling and so I never did anything with the pages. And these are the paints I used for this art journal spread

love the way it looks over the text papers!!

I needed to come up with a quote for my page.  When I created my girl I was thinking of how I can empower myself this year, thinking of how I want to be emulating that in my art.  So I came up with this quote that I thought fit perfect and I typed it & printed it out then cut it out and glued it to my page.  Added some watercolor drips under it to tie it into my page.

Thank you Kiala for allowing us to have so much fun with your Empowerment Deck!!  Now on to some giveaway fun!

Workshop & Giveaway

Hi Creative Friends and Happy Holiday Season,

I hope that you have been enjoying all that the season has to offer with the lights, festivities and coming together to spend time with family and friends!

We have been up to our eyeballs with some renovations we have been doing in our home so it’s been quite hectic add the new puppy to that and you could say I’m a bit exhausted lol.  I really haven’t had a lot of time to make art and keep up with posting.  In the past this would have totally frustrated me and I would have been stressed to the 9’s about it.  But I know that I have a loving community of creative friends here that more than get what it feels like to be overwhelmed and I know that all of you would not want that for me as I would never want it for any of you!! xoxo

So instead of fighting the inevitable I’ve just been letting things go.  Only half my house is decorated for the holidays but it’s ok bc it’s the rooms I am in the most.  I have not made one batch of holiday cookies when I normally would have 10+ batches made and froze by now, I have barely started my holiday shopping (and there’s only a week till Christmas) – but none of that matters because I have my husband, son, pugs and my new puppy.  We are getting out when we can to do some holiday-ish things and I am taking the time to enjoy watching Luna see things like snow for the first time and learning to walk and just enjoying her being a puppy before she’s all grown up.

Create a Joy Journal + My Current Read

“Joy is what happens to us when we allow ourselves to recognize how good things really are”

-Marianne Williamson

Hi Friends,

For me it seems that durning Holiday time I become more mindful of all the blessings and happiness that has been bestowed upon me, but during the year it sometimes get a bit lost in the bustle of life.  I am sure I’m not the originator of this little book I’m about to share with you, but it has become a bit of my personal go to in life and helps to remind me when things are tough that I have a lot of “Joy” in my life.  At the end of the day I use it to write down all the things that have brought me joy that day, or anything good that has happened.  Just a bit of reflective time that I can have to reference in the future when things get a bit rough and I am feeling as if I have lost my Joy.  This would make a beautiful gift for a friend or a great stocking stuffer for a loved one!

Because this little “joy journal” is so special to me I wanted to share with all of you a creative and easy way to create your own.  So if you haven’t already stop on over to Tiare Smith Designs Blog, and let me know what you think! 🙂

Before I leave you all for today I wanted to share my current read with all of you.  I just love books and I’m a seasonal book reader as well.  Meaning I love to read winter themed books in the winter and summer themed ones in the summer  – you get it.  So this year while at Barnes and Noble I spotted this adorable book.  Well I’m sure that you can all guess why I had to have it.  I didn’t even read what it was about I just bought it well – 2 actually lol.  One for me and one for a pug loving friend.  I am almost all the way through this book and it’s wonderful!  It’s not just about a pug and it’s a beautiful, funny and touching read.  I highly recommend it!

Wishing you all a beautiful day!

Out of the box holiday gift ideas

Hi Friends,

We are just a few short days away from Thanksgiving and then the mad rush of the Holiday season really starts with gift buying madness as I call it :).  With this in mind I thought that I would share some “out of the box” gift giving ideas and also some ideas of giving back.

When I was young one of my most favorite things to do at Holiday time with my mom was to select names off the “Giving Tree” either at our church or at the mall (the Salvation Army here puts names on trees in our mall of people and kids of all ages who are in need).  My mom would always let me select about 4, we would go shopping and by things like gloves, hats, scarves etc.  We would take them home, wrap them up and bring them back the next week.  I have continued that tradition and I still find so much joy in doing it, knowing I’m providing someone who otherwise might not have a gift.

But, What if you want to give back but don’t have extra money to spend?  Being a single mom for many years and working 3 jobs to stay afloat  – that was totally my situation most Christmases.  I did not always have extra money to purchase gifts.  So I had to find creative ways to give back.  For those of you who feel like they want to do something but don’t have the extra funds here are some of my….

“creative – out of the box” ideas I’ve come up with:

  1.  Volunteer some time at a soup kitchen – there are so many places that would love to have someone stop in and help cook a meal or bake some cookies – don’t just think of Rescue Missions or Salvation Army – There is the Ronald McDonald house, we have one of those that is for adults called the Sarah House, there are hospice homes, disabled veteran homes – elderly shut-ins – do a search you will be surprised at what you will find locally in your area
  2. Volunteer some time at an animal rescue or humane association
  3. Have old towels and washcloths?  Animal rescues are always looking for these things.
  4. Have used but still good coats – boots and outerwear? – Donate them to a church or school – there are so many out there that would love something that you or your kids don’t fit anymore
  5. Volunteer some time at your church… if they have a day care during service or youth group or after school group that might need some extra help
  6. Love to bake cookies or breads ?  How about dropping some off at a Hospital or hospice home especially for the over night shifts – even nursing homes.
  7. Knit or crochet?  How about a blanket or 2 for a nursing home resident
  8. Have holiday music on a CD or MP3 player?  Copy some on to some CDs (they are so cheap now a days) and drop off at nursing homes – respite houses – disabled homes VA hospitals etc
  9. How about a box of instant hot cocoa and a bag of marshmallows to a low income after school program or day care

For out of the box – low cost ideas for loved ones and friends:

  1.  Offer a friend with kids a free night of kid sitting so they can have the night off
  2. Offer to walk or sit a friends pet – especially during holiday time it’s hard sometimes to get things done like shopping if you have to keep stopping home to let a pet out
  3. Help a loved one who doesn’t write well do the addresses on their holiday cards – I used to print up for my mom – mailing addresses of our family so that when she would send cards for any occasion she wouldn’t have to write these out as she has bad arthritis in her hands.
  4. Offer to help a friend or loved one wrap their holiday gifts
  5. If you can foods and have extra – put together a little “gift box” of some of your delicious canned goods – I know for myself I love things made by hand and with love!
  6. Again if you knit or crochet – think about scarves, coffee cozies, gloves, hats, socks or a lap blanket for a loved one or friend.
  7. Have a friend or loved one who reads?  How about hitting a used book store or thrift store and picking up a few new reads – wrap them with a few new tea bags for a special night of reading and tea
  8. Have a friend who loves coffee?  Look for a pretty mug (places like Marshalls or TJ Maxx, even the thrift store sell some beautiful inexpensive mugs) – grab a couple sample bags of some flavored coffees and wrap them all up with a couple candy canes for stir sticks.
  9. How about a little handmade journal this could even be for a young girl.
  10. Put together a little art set – put together according to age but you can find fairly inexpensive mini paint sets or small watercolor paint sets at Michaels – even check out your local dollar store you’d be surprised what you can find in there.  Pick up a pretty journal – or make one add to it a couple pretty pens again you can find gel pens for fairly inexpensive – you don’t have to buy a huge set just a couple.  Wrap it up with a few pieces of pretty ribbon you have in your stash kids & adults love little kits of pretty creative things!

I hope that this helps some of you out there looking for some unique ideas for giving or giving back.  There are really so many creative ideas and you may have some of your own that would be unique to your loved one, these are more of a “General one size fits all ideas” just to help you get those creative juices flowing with ideas!!

I hope to have time to share a few gift giving ideas that are handmade with all of you in the next few weeks for those of you who would like to give something handmade.

If you missed my video posted on Saturday you can watch it by clicking here I show you how to create your own tag kit for holiday time – this could also be made and given to a friend or loved one or change the colors – paper etc to something neutral and not holiday and give as a gift to be used for any occasion throughout the year.

This year for the Holidays I am committing to not buying more crafty stuff but I am going to use what I have and make some pretty handmade gifts and kits (because lets face it most of us have a lot of “stuff” we can use).  It feels so good to use things I bought and loved but have been holding on to for the “right time to use it”. Well NOW is the right time.

Who else is in?  All you have to do is use something you already have in your stash instead of buying something new.  Share that you are using your holiday stash and tag me on social media – if you share on your blog please link back here so I can see what you are making and creating!  Get creative and use up some of the delicious holiday stash you have collected!

I will have a new Holiday tutorial on Friday, 11/24 on my Youtube channel.  Many times my tutorials get posted there before I can share them on my blog so be sure to subscribe to my channel so you don’t miss any of my free tutorials.  You can do that here .

I leave you all with a little pug and frenchie love on this chilly day here 🙂

Have an amazing Monday my friends!!

What’s in your heart?

Hi Friends what’s in your heart today?

Be sure to read to the bottom where you can snag another Freebie

As the days of November quickly go by, I can’t help but think that I have so very many things to be grateful for and so I just wanted to share a few things that are in my heart and on my mind today.

Recently I created an art journal page for the Gratitude Junk Journal and the prompt that was provided – prompted me to create a page being thankful for coffee.  Seems so trivial I know.  But when I sat and thought about the simplicity of a cup of coffee I realized that this simple drink has so much more meaning to me that what it is on the surface. (below a photo of this layout)

I mean  – Don’t get me wrong I love my coffee – steaming hot & fresh out of the pot first thing in the morning – waking me up – providing me with the promise of a new day – a fresh start – a do over of sorts.

But but then I realized all the times I turn to coffee…

  • A call to a friend – do you want to meet for coffee and chat?

  • A text to my husband – it’s been a long day want to go for coffee after work?

  • A visit to my mom at the nursing home – mom look I brought you coffee with lots of sugar just how you love it.

  • A call from my son – you need help with something? – Let’s go grab a coffee and talk about it

As I sat and pondered all these things more continued to pop in my head –

  • all the times I visited someone in the hospital and for a bit of respite went down for a cup of coffee

  • My son as a teenager going through a rough patch – Dan and I going for coffee to talk about how we will get through these days / months / years ahead

  • At an event or a retreat – hey you love coffee too – OMG me too – instant friends headed off to get coffee each day

The list goes on and on but you get the point.  Sometimes these simplest things in our lives are really the deep meaningful ones that happen while we are just living.  This month I’m choosing to be more mindful and pay attention to the little things that matter in my life.  To look at all those “little things” I’m blessed with on a daily basis.

Which brings me to the Freebie I have for all of you today

I want to remind each an everyone of you that I am so grateful for you!  I appreciate you stopping by – leaving me comments and sharing my posts.  So today I have another gratitude gift for you.  I have selected some of my favorite quotes and put them together here in a download that you can print off and use in your art or journals.

Wishing all of you a wonderful and amazing weekend full of peace love and happiness!
xoxo- Sherry
