New Endeavors on the Horizon

Hi Beautiful Friends,

The past week has been a whirlwind of ups and downs for me.  The meditation / vision and enlightenment that happened earlier in the week was very powerful and full of intense feelings/emotions and healing.  But I didn’t truly get in enough self care for myself after that and so it left me feeling drained and a bit off and irritable as the week went on.  As we still have remodeling construction going on in our house it’s so very hard for me to get that “quite” time that I really need to just decompress.

Friday I had the house to myself to in the  morning I took some time to just “be”.  I drank my tea, sat on the couch with Luna snuggled in next to me and the pugs in their “spots” by me.  I lit a candle, dabbed on some of my favorite essential oils (of course Luna has to have some too because she loves the oils lol), put on some soft “Healing Harp” music, flicked on a little mood – lighting ( little lights I have next to the couch).  I allowed myself to just shut my eyes, breathe, let my thoughts wander, relax and enjoy the quite, the peacefulness of the morning.  I sipped my tea and watched the squirrels outside my window running about the trees.  The rain was just coming down every so gently and what should have been a gloomy rainy day was a day of peace and tranquility for me.  It was exactly what I needed to rejuvenate from the week.

We always talk about “doing the work” to heal, the process you go through, the steps that one needs to take, but we all but forget to talk about the self care that is so very much needed when doing this work.  We forget that just like when engaging in physical work we need to rest – with emotional work we need to rest and be gentle with ourselves as well.

I have learned for myself that if I do not get the time to do this self care and for me a lot of it really is just about having quiet time – peaceful time – time to reflect and just be, then I get very anxious, overwhelmed feeling, and a bit stressed out.

Once I was feeling more like myself I sat down at my table and decided to draw an oracle card from a new deck that I have been totally crushing on,  it’s called Earth Warriors Oracle by Alana Fairchild.

Rarely when I use my oracle cards or tarot cards to I ask a specific question, I almost always ask what message do you have for me today?  As I’m shuffling my deck, I think in my head:  allow me to draw a card that I need today, be the guidance and show me what I need to work on or whatever message that I might need to know.

So this was the card I draw:  Anka – Kin of the Red Hawk Tribe

Instantly upon seeing this card I thought WOW this is a powerful card.  The colors, the imagery, that hawk staring right at you.  I have not worked with this deck enough to know what the message was, and intuitively I just knew it was a powerful message but was not sure what it was going to entail.  So I went to the guide book to read the message this card had for me.

It totally blew me away as it was right inline with the things I have been putting into motion these past couple of days.  I have been going over in my head a vision I have had for probably over a year now.  Asking the Universe to help me bring it to fruition.

My Vision…

I have been envisioning leading a gathering of women – coming together for more than just art – but for the community, for the support, for the healing that a gathering can provide.  So one of the steps that I recently took to move forward with this vision is signing up for a certification class called the “Art of Circle” this will guide me on how to hold Soul Women Circle Groups here locally.

And so a new endeavor is born…

I am planning to hold my first “Circle” sometime in May.  My Circle Gatherings will encompass art and rituals that you will then be able to use again on your own, there will art journaling, connecting with ourselves and each other.  We will support and uplift each other, we will learn how to connect again to our true-selves and use the 4 elements Earth, Wind, Water and Fire to heal and strengthen us on our journeys.  When our circle is complete you leave feeling full of life, love and support.  You will feel grounded and whole.  If this sounds like something your soul has been craving then fill out the form below to be notified when I launch my first Circle Event.

These gatherings will be small, intimate and open to a  limited number of participants.  To have exclusive access to join fill out the form above and you will be notified before my event goes live on my blog and social media.

And so I created a soul card for my new Endeavor – She is holding a sword and above her   the question Fear or Courage – as she looks below her with sword in hand the words purple power are there.  This week in the Empowered Creative Woman group   our Weekly Challenge was to create a piece of art using the color that you see yourself as.  I see myself as the color of a purplish – indigo and so created this card using those colors to express my new endeavor and these colors.  What I am undertaking is powerful – important – challenging and yet I feel so strongly that this is not only what I need but what the world needs right now, that I am choosing to use my “purple power” to move forward with courage.  I choose courage and I encourage you all to choose courage as well,  if you feel drawn to step out of your comfort zone, to connect and learn to live a more full life, come with me in this circle journey and embrace your life’s journey with me.

Here you can see what I glued on the back of my soul card

I would love to hear what you all feel is “your color” leave me a comment below and tell me.  Have an amazing day my friends!

Looking for a boost of inspiration?

Hi Creative Friends and Happy Friday!

Those who know me and have taken my class in Hacking the ColorWheel Session 1 (which is still available and you can check it out here )know that I just love MOOD BOARDS.  I have a Pinterest board dedicated to just mood boards here , I am not sure why I am so drawn to them but when I start looking at them it’s like I can’t stop.  I guess it’s because they do “create” a mood and feeling that stirs inside of me and it’s almost euphoric!  So In December I shared the first Mood Board that I actually created and you can see that in my post here– it had all the makings of feeling cozy, festive and holiday-ish with a little bit of a romantic feel.  – at least when I was putting it together those are some of the moods / feelings that came up for me.

So today for a bit of inspiration I have created another “mood board” that I want to share with all of you.  But first I would like you to just grab a piece of paper and a pen.  Now when you see the mood board don’t over think it just write down the first things that come to your mind. Itcan be anything from a feeling, to a texture, to a memory – it doesn’t matter anything and everything that you put down is RIGHT!

Okay are you ready?

you sure?

haha just teasing here it is 🙂

Once you have all those thoughts and ideas down on your paper now you can use them to jump start your creativity – to create in your art journal or a piece of art.

Using mood boards is a great way to get out of that “creative rut” – to try on new textures or “moods”, even to experiment with new color combinations.

This mood board gives me lots of ideas and I decided to create a watercolor wreath using the color palette from it.

I loved the berries in the top photo so incorporated those into my painting.  I also added a quote that I found, as the white roses with the book pages left me with bit of a romantic feel and the birds gave me a feeling of being free.

I would love to have you share anything you might create using this mood board.  If you have a blog then please link back to here.  If you are posting on IG or FB please tag me.

One of the greatest pleasures I get as an artist is when I inspire someone.  Thank you my friends for stopping by and choosing to share some of your time with me today!

Due to the ongoing construction at my house making it impossible to do a voice over for my video I will be sharing the video I have for this month’s free download tomorrow.  I thought I could get it done for today but it’s just not going to happen with all the noise that’s going on.

Here is a sneak peek at this months freebie that will go out in my newsletter, I will also be holding off and sending out my newsletter tomorrow as well.  So if you aren’t signed up for my newsletter you have one more day to do so and still receive this months free download.  You can do that here.   And a little sneak peek below…

StencilGirl & Inspiration Deck Blog Hop

Good Morning Friends today I have a quick tutorial for you on how I used the Mixed Media Inspiration Deck created by Kiala Givehand as a prompt to get me started in my art journal.

Starting out with just shuffling my cards and then I selected one at random

I decided to start out with 2 pages in my art journal that I really didn’t like it had kinda just been for doodling and so I never did anything with the pages. And these are the paints I used for this art journal spread

love the way it looks over the text papers!!

I needed to come up with a quote for my page.  When I created my girl I was thinking of how I can empower myself this year, thinking of how I want to be emulating that in my art.  So I came up with this quote that I thought fit perfect and I typed it & printed it out then cut it out and glued it to my page.  Added some watercolor drips under it to tie it into my page.

Thank you Kiala for allowing us to have so much fun with your Empowerment Deck!!  Now on to some giveaway fun!

Merry Christmas My Friends

Hello my dear friends and Happy Holidays to all of you.

With Christmas just a little more than a day away I wanted to just pop in and share sometime with all of you.  I have been really just taking time to be in the present and have hardly been on social media or on my blog for the past few weeks.  I have to say that it has been really nice.

I’ve had a chance to really spend some quality time with my husband which you all know I truly adore and we both have been taking it a bit easy.

Our morning routine after getting the pugs and frenchie all fed consists of sitting on our sun porch which is all decked out for the holidays with 2 small trees and a couple special holiday sets – one is a skating rink where the people move around on the “ice” and the little village lights up, the other is a little village scene with a Christmas tree and Santa and his reindeer that move and light up.  We sit sip our coffee, chat and just enjoy each others company.  We talk about past Christmases and holidays from our childhood.  We have been chatting about the new year and things we hope to do and trips we hope to take.  This time has been so heartfelt and enjoyable and if you are allotted the chance to take some time to just enjoy life and your loved ones I highly recommend it.

That’s not to say that I haven’t missed all of you and my art, I truly have, but I have needed this time to just be.

I have so many things that I want to do and share with all of you in this up coming year.  I need this time to really hone in on my plans and figure out a real course of action.

I want to give a shout out and HUGE CONGRATS to the winner of the free spot in the BadAss Art Journal Workshop – Janis Graham!  I want to thank everyone that took the time to stop by and leave a comment and enter the giveaway!

This is truly going to be a wonderful workshop – with so many talented artists if you are looking for that one workshop that you can keep going back to this would be it.  You can check out all the details as well as sign up here .

Workshop & Giveaway

Hi Creative Friends and Happy Holiday Season,

I hope that you have been enjoying all that the season has to offer with the lights, festivities and coming together to spend time with family and friends!

We have been up to our eyeballs with some renovations we have been doing in our home so it’s been quite hectic add the new puppy to that and you could say I’m a bit exhausted lol.  I really haven’t had a lot of time to make art and keep up with posting.  In the past this would have totally frustrated me and I would have been stressed to the 9’s about it.  But I know that I have a loving community of creative friends here that more than get what it feels like to be overwhelmed and I know that all of you would not want that for me as I would never want it for any of you!! xoxo

So instead of fighting the inevitable I’ve just been letting things go.  Only half my house is decorated for the holidays but it’s ok bc it’s the rooms I am in the most.  I have not made one batch of holiday cookies when I normally would have 10+ batches made and froze by now, I have barely started my holiday shopping (and there’s only a week till Christmas) – but none of that matters because I have my husband, son, pugs and my new puppy.  We are getting out when we can to do some holiday-ish things and I am taking the time to enjoy watching Luna see things like snow for the first time and learning to walk and just enjoying her being a puppy before she’s all grown up.

Create a Joy Journal + My Current Read

“Joy is what happens to us when we allow ourselves to recognize how good things really are”

-Marianne Williamson

Hi Friends,

For me it seems that durning Holiday time I become more mindful of all the blessings and happiness that has been bestowed upon me, but during the year it sometimes get a bit lost in the bustle of life.  I am sure I’m not the originator of this little book I’m about to share with you, but it has become a bit of my personal go to in life and helps to remind me when things are tough that I have a lot of “Joy” in my life.  At the end of the day I use it to write down all the things that have brought me joy that day, or anything good that has happened.  Just a bit of reflective time that I can have to reference in the future when things get a bit rough and I am feeling as if I have lost my Joy.  This would make a beautiful gift for a friend or a great stocking stuffer for a loved one!

Because this little “joy journal” is so special to me I wanted to share with all of you a creative and easy way to create your own.  So if you haven’t already stop on over to Tiare Smith Designs Blog, and let me know what you think! 🙂

Before I leave you all for today I wanted to share my current read with all of you.  I just love books and I’m a seasonal book reader as well.  Meaning I love to read winter themed books in the winter and summer themed ones in the summer  – you get it.  So this year while at Barnes and Noble I spotted this adorable book.  Well I’m sure that you can all guess why I had to have it.  I didn’t even read what it was about I just bought it well – 2 actually lol.  One for me and one for a pug loving friend.  I am almost all the way through this book and it’s wonderful!  It’s not just about a pug and it’s a beautiful, funny and touching read.  I highly recommend it!

Wishing you all a beautiful day!

What sparks your creativity?

Hi Friends,

I know it’s been awhile, things got a little bit hectic for me these past few weeks.  I am preparing to leave for Kentucky on Thursday morning for a StenciGirl and Friends art retreat where I will be attending some fabulous classes with some of my favorite artists…. MaryBeth Shaw, Traci Bautista, Seth Apter, Pam Carriker and more.  I will also be teaching a pop up demo there myself so, life has been moving at lightening speed for me.  I promise to take lots of pics and if I have time I will post some here in the evenings just to share what’s going on with all of you.

This leads me into today’s post…… What Sparks your creativity?

Knowing the answer to this will help you when you have a creative block.  So now I bet you are asking …well Yeah but how do I figure that out?  Well it just so happens I have some tips to help you figure that out.

If you are like me there is nothing worse than sitting there with that blank sheet of paper in front of you and having absolutely nothing creative come to mind.  And yes I have read all those online posts about throw some paint on to the paper – just start – don’t worry about what you make – yadda yadda yadda, I’ve read them all.

And the truth is none of those things have worked for me.

And I do care what my paper looks like

And throwing paint on a sheet of paper does not spark my creativity.

In fact all those things frustrate me more because when I try them and then don’t work well it’s down right disappointing and again if you are like me you are asking yourself at this point – ok how does this stuff work for everyone else.

Well the truth is maybe it works for some but it doesn’t work for everyone, like I said it doesn’t work for me.

And if you think that because I can put out nice looking art that I don’t get creative block – HA!  WRONG.  I get it, many times.  So here is how I have figured out FINALLY what sparks my creativity.

I pay attention.  Yup it’s that simple.  I pay attention when I am in a creative mood and I notice what kinds of things spark my creativity.  I make notes, I keep a journal, sometimes even take pictures and that allows me too find my way back to my creativity when I have lost it.

Below I share with you things that work for me but again, we are not all alike so what works for one does not always work for everyone, so I encourage you to pay attention to yourself, be mindful and take notes.

One thing that works for me is cleaning things out – not always just my art room but any room in the house, closets, cupboards etc.  Why does something like this help me?  Well although I’m not completely sure I think it is the fact that It helps my mind concentrate on something else.  It’s busy work and allows lots of movement which is a lot different from when I’m sitting and creating.

Another thing I do is take lots of walks – especially during different times of day when I normally wouldn’t and I try to notice the world around me, the sites, the sounds, the smells, the colors.  I try to stimulate my other senses to spark that creativity.  I don’t try to force it I just relax and enjoy myself getting out of my usual environment always makes me feel refreshed and renewed.

And finally this last one may not appeal to everyone but when I’m in a creative rut I love to cook.  Sometimes channeling my creativeness into the kitchen helps me just feel better and refreshed. I love to create new dishes and lots of times just doing something totally different yet creative helps me tremendously.

Share in the comments your ideas, tips or things that help you.  If it helps someone else or gives someone that creative spark again it’s so worth the share!!

Now I’d like to share with all of you what I’ve been up to creatively.  I’ve been working in my art journal and a new watercolor journal. I have decided to take this new watercolor journal and turn it into a true visual journal where I take notes with tips and techniques that I learn along the way in watercolor and I will also be adding personal bits of my learning experiences and things that have gone on each day.

So here I have created my own little mix of colors, I was feeling the need for some deeper fall colors and since I didn’t have quite what I was looking for I just mixed up a little palette.

and well it is getting to be almost pumpkin time here so thought I would do a little watercolor practice on some pumpkins. So above I have the traditional orange and below some fun Teal / Turquoise.  I love to do things like pumpkins because they are a simple easy shape to draw which allows me more time to practice watercolor painting techniques and shading – color blending and layering.

and lastly I want share one of my art journal pages I created.

Thanks so much friends for stopping by and sharing your time with me!  Hope all of you have an amazing rest of the week, I will be back soon with pics from the retreat!!

xoxo – Sherry

Weekend Happenings

Good Evening friends I just wanted to pop in and say hello.  I hope everyone has had an amazing weekend.  I have been totally cleaning out and over hauling my art studio at home. I have just felt the need to get it organized and more to my liking.  See my video below for my progress 🙂

And this happened this weekend.  For the longest time I have had my trims in bins where I had to dig through bags of them to find what I wanted.  This weekend I took the time to take smaller pieces of my favorite ones and wrap them around a tag so I could put them in of of my favorite wire bins where I an easily find what I want when I’m creating.  This was a HUGE undertaking but now that it’s done I not only have easy access to my favorite trims I totally love how they look on display in my studio.  Yummy colorful inspiration!!

Saturday morning Dan and I made our way to the farmer’s market as we often do for fresh fruits and veggies.  Okay they also have the most amazing fried dough so that might get me up out of bed early on a Saturday to go to the market as well, but I’m not telling (lol).  Well this week they had some beautiful Sunflowers and my husband bought me a bouquet of 6 gorgeous sunflowers.  They are my most absolute favorite flower of all time,    and I have painted many sunflower paintings including the one that is available in my shop here

I had a little time Friday evening to do some painting.  I have totally fallen in love with the Jane Davenport Watercolors.  Being new to watercolors I do not know a lot about the difference in brands but I can say that her’s are luscious, blend amazing and have a lot of pigment!

Well my friends it’s getting late going on 10pm here so I should wrap it up, I’m going to have a glass of wine and relax with my sweet hubby for awhile before going to bed.  Don’t forget to sign up for my newsletter here

So I leave you with one final thought as we approach a new week ahead:

how beautiful a blank page can be as we can start fresh, start over and start a new.  Fear not the blank page but yet Embrace it and the beautiful new week ahead, where you can paint your days any color that you wish.  Have a beautiful evening friends!
